Somtochukwu’s parents reluctantly send her to secondary school with the “lazy girls” in Amankalu. When the time comes, she informs them that she has decided to go to university in Enugu, but they bitterly object. With time, their bitterness brews into disengagement until Somtochukwu decides to visit them one day. Will her parents take her in again, and, just as importantly, will she forgive them?

About Illino

At Illino, we create African stories that empower, educate and entertain everyone who interacts with them. We push the bounds of language, style and cultural norms in our stories, to translate the multidimensional, multicultural and multigenerational nature of African experiences into stories in English. ‘Somtochukwu’ is the second of five monthly short story publications which we have commissioned to do exactly this. We invite you to join our journey by subscribing to our mailing list!
